Types of Fire Alarms
There are several different classifications or types of fire alarms ranging in complexity and benefits offered.
The M Fire Alarm Systems - manual systems where the alarm is raised by someone operating a call point such as a break-glass. These raise the alarm throughout the building . There is no automatic fire detection and the system relies on it being manually operated.
L Fire Alarm systems - primarily designed to protect lives, these systems incorporate some form of fire sensors which automatically operate the alarm when triggered. There are various types from L1 - L5 with the sub categories denoting the various types of automatic sensors sirens and beacons to be fitted.
These systems are designed to allow buildings to be evacuated and prevent loss of life. They may not be connected directly to the fire services.
P Fire Alarm Systems - These incorporate automatic fire detection and automatically contact the fire services informing them of the fire. again there are sub divisions P1 -P5 which specify the type of equipment to be used.
Combination Fire Alarm Systems
In order for an alarm system to be "fit for purpose" for any particular application, it may consist of it combination of the above types. The systems can also be incorporated with fire sprinkler systems to not only raise the alarm but also combat the fire at the earliest possible opportunity.
Various technologies can be involved in the fire alarm systems such as radio fire alarms and wireless fire alarms both of which have advantages for certain situations.
